My upstairs neighbor vacuumed at 6:15am for 4 days straight and I finally snapped
I live in a 1930s building in Richmond and the floors are basically paper, so when Dave above me started running his vacuum at 6:15 every morning I could hear every single pass. Day four I stood on a chair and knocked on my ceiling with a broom handle, which somehow did nothing because he just turned on a podcast instead. I left a note that said "please, any time after 8 is fine, I'm begging you" and he wrote back "sorry, I work early shifts." Has anyone actually gotten a neighbor to change a habit like this, or do I just buy earplugs and accept my fate?
Oh man, I went through almost the exact same thing in my old spot and I want to tell you there IS hope. What finally worked for me was catching the guy in person, not through notes, because notes let people stay in their own head about it. I waited for him by the mailboxes on a Saturday and just said hey, I know you work early and I'm not trying to make your life hard, but the vacuum at 6am is killing me, could you do it when you get home instead. Turns out he had no idea how loud it was down here and he actually felt bad, he just never thought about it. He switched to vacuuming after work that same week and we were fine after that. So my advice is skip the broom and the notes and just talk to Dave face to face, it works way more than you'd think.
