I live in a 1920s building in Portland and my upstairs neighbor's pipes scream every night around 11. The handyman (who I figured was just trying to get out of doing real work) said to run my shower on hot for 10 minutes before I sleep, something about keeping the riser warm so it stops clanking when it cools. I tried it for a week and the noise dropped way down, maybe 3 knocks a night instead of 20. Now I do it every night even though my water bill went up $14. Anyone else have weird tricks like this that actually worked? My neighbor thinks I'm insane but he's the one stomping around at midnight.
