I watched a DIY video where they ran alarm wire right next to a 240v line.
The guy in the video was installing a system in his garage and didn't use any conduit or separation, just zip-tied everything together. I've seen interference issues from that exact setup cause false alarms for years, and it's a nightmare to trace. How do you guys handle explaining proper wire runs to homeowners who think they can just copy a YouTube tutorial?

Oh man that's a disaster waiting to happen lol. I've had to fix that exact mess before, low voltage wire just bundled right with the main power feed. The interference causes all sorts of random faults that make zero sense until you trace the whole run. Trying to explain the why to a homeowner is tough after they've already seen the "easy" way online. You gotta show them the code book sometimes, point out the separation rules, and explain that the extra time running it right is way cheaper than chasing ghosts later.

Ugh, my buddy learned the hard way like @grace_white said, constant false alarms from that exact mess.

Wasn't there a whole article about this in one of the trade magazines last year? They did a deep dive on how that electromagnetic interference actually messes with the signal. It's not just random, it can cause specific failure codes that point to bad sensors, making you replace parts that are totally fine. The worst part is the problem might come and go depending on what else is running on the circuit. Running a separate conduit seems like a pain but it's the only way to be sure.
