Finally got that stubborn old DSC panel in a 90s condo to talk to the monitoring station

Was at a retrofit in West Seattle, and the communicator kept failing its handshake. I swapped the RJ31X jack with a spare from my truck and the signal went green instantly. Anyone else have a go-to fix for finicky phone line connections on those legacy systems?

Oh man, that RJ31X jack is always the weak link. I've cleaned so many oxidized contacts with a pencil eraser as a last resort before a swap. Once found a spiderweb bridging the terminals in an old panel, that was a new one.

Remember finding a mouse nest in a junction box once.

A pencil eraser? That actually worked?
