The retired A&P who told me to stop guessing and start reading the manual
Back in 2019 I was chasing a fuel leak on a King Air 200 at a small field outside Wichita, and I had the panel off for the third time that morning when a retired A&P named Dale walked over from the hangar next door. He watched me for a minute, then pointed at the torque value I had written on my glove and said, 'You wrote that down from memory, didn't you.' He was right, and it turned out I had the wrong number by about 15 inch-pounds. He sat with me while I pulled the maintenance manual up on the shop computer and we found the right spec in under two minutes. I still think about that every time I catch myself trusting my own head instead of the book, and I'm wondering how many of you had a mentor call you out like that early on.
