That 60 year old line mechanic changed how I see torque specs

I was swapping out a nose gear tire on a Cessna 172 last Tuesday and an old-timer walked over, watched me for a minute, then said 'you know, that torque wrench doesn't make it right if the threads are dirty.' He pulled out a little thread chaser and cleaned the bolt holes on the wheel half before I even started. I'd been chasing loose lug nuts for months on different jobs, and it hit me that I never checked the threads themselves. Have any of you guys had a stubborn fastener that just needed a simple cleanup before everything clicked?

Did you ever notice how a little cleaning can solve a problem that seemed way bigger? @haydenbutler you're right to stop and think about it, because that old timer just saved you from a ton of frustration down the road. I had a similar thing with a control linkage bolt on a Piper Arrow. It kept binding and I was ready to order a whole new part. Then I just ran a tap through the hole and brushed the threads clean on the bolt. Went right together smooth as butter. Threads are like the first handshake of a fastener, you gotta make sure both sides are clean before you trust them.
