Spent $180 on a borescope and it saved me one inspection, but cost me three others
Bought one of those cheap USB borescopes off Amazon for $180 about 6 months ago, mostly to check exhaust valves without pulling a cylinder. First job with it, found a burnt valve on a 172 that would've been a missed find, so it paid for itself right there. But the probe is so flimsy that I've kinked two of them poking around tight cowlings, and at $40 a replacement, plus the time I wasted fighting the focus knob, I'm not sure I'm ahead. Half the guys in my shop swear by the rigid scope from the tool truck at triple the price, and the other half say a flashlight and a mirror still works fine. Anybody got a setup that actually holds up to daily ramp use without costing a mortgage payment?
