Showerthought: I was crowding my air fryer basket and making soggy food
I kept getting uneven, soft fries from my Cosori air fryer until I watched a video from a cooking channel in Portland. The host said to leave space between each piece so the hot air can move around. I tried it with just one layer of tater tots and they came out perfectly crisp. Has anyone found a good rule for how much to put in at once?

Took me way too long to figure that out too lol. My first batch looked like sad steamed potatoes.

Tell me about it. I had the exact same problem with my first try. I was so sure I was following the recipe right, but they came out totally flat and pale. It took me three more attempts to realize I wasn't letting the oil get hot enough before adding them. That moment when you finally get that perfect golden crisp is just the best feeling.

My old roommate in Seattle used to call it the "single layer law." She'd do one layer of fries, then shake the basket halfway, never fill it past that. But what about stuff that shrinks, like bacon? I'll pack that basket because it curls up and makes its own space. So maybe the real rule is about the food changing shape, not just the starting amount.
