Brother told me my air fryer fries were 'soggy' so I changed my prep method completely

He took one bite and said they taste like steamed potatoes. I was using frozen fries straight from the bag with no oil at all. Now I thaw them for 10 minutes, toss them in a bowl with a teaspoon of oil and some salt, then cook at 400 for 12 minutes shaking halfway. The difference is night and day. Has anyone else gotten a blunt criticism that made you rethink your whole air fryer routine?

Oh man, steamed potatoes is the kind of burn that haunts you at 2 AM while you're staring at your air fryer. I mean, your brother might as well have pulled out a food critic's scorecard and given you zero stars. But honestly, he did you a solid because soggy fries are a crime against humanity. I went through almost the exact same thing with my own air fryer - just dumping frozen stuff in there and wondering why it tasted like a wet paper towel. Now I'm out here coating everything in oil like it's going out of style and my fries actually snap when you bite them. What's the point of having an air fryer if you're not gonna get that crunch, right?

Dude, "taste like steamed potatoes" is brutal but hilarious. Same thing happened to me with frozen hash browns. I was just dumping them in dry and wondering why they came out like mush. Started tossing them in a tiny bit of avocado oil and salt, plus a pinch of paprika. Now they actually crunch. Your frozen fry method sounds solid. I gotta try that thaw step.
