A friend's air fryer mistake made me double-check my own habits

I was at my buddy's apartment in Austin last month, and he pulled out some frozen fries for a snack. He just dumped them straight from the bag into the basket, no shaking the basket or anything. I asked him about it, and he said, 'I just set it and forget it, they always come out fine.' But when he opened it, half were burnt and half were still frozen. It really stuck with me because I used to do the same thing. Now I always pause halfway to shake the basket, no matter what I'm cooking. Has anyone else had a close call that made them change a small step in their routine?

My first time with chicken wings was a total disaster. I cooked a full pound on the highest setting for twenty minutes straight. They were like little black rocks on the outside but somehow still pink inside. Now I NEVER cook anything on high the whole time. I start high for a few minutes to get it crispy, then drop the temp way down to finish cooking through. That middle shake is key for wings too.

Wow, your friend really took "set it and forget it" literally.

Oh man, that reminds me of the time I tried to reheat pizza in mine... I just threw the slice in there flat, didn't even think about it. Ended up with a piece of charcoal on top and cold, gummy dough underneath. Now I always prop it up against the side of the basket so the hot air gets all around it.
