Reading an AI chatbot transcript made me realize how fake these demos are

I was at a tech meetup in Austin last Tuesday and someone showed me a supposed "real" conversation their startup had with an AI customer service bot. The transcript looked perfect, too perfect. Every answer was polite, on point, and never asked for clarification once. Then the founder admitted they edited out the moments where the bot gave wrong refund amounts and looped on the same question three times. That made me think we need to ask for raw logs, not polished screenshots, before trusting any AI claims. Has anyone else seen a demo that conveniently skipped the messy parts?

That Austin group sounds like half the startups I've met at trade shows. The raw logs would show real users typing things like "no I meant the blue one" or "where's my tracking number" and the bot guessing wrong four times before giving up. But here's the thing, I've also seen demos fail live where the bot actually helped someone solve a weird edge case, and that looked worse on stage because nobody expected it to work. Those messy moments are real, but they're not always bad. Sometimes they show the bot learning mid conversation or finally getting it after a few tries. The founder editing those parts out tells me more about their confidence in the product than the raw logs ever would.
