My little hobby project just processed its 10,000th image, which feels wild for something I built in my spare time.

Built in my spare time" is the part that gets me. Hitting a milestone like that on a side project is a different kind of satisfaction. It proves the thing actually works when you're not forcing it. Makes all those late nights feel worth it.

Yeah, "makes all those late nights feel worth it" is so true. I read somewhere that side projects let you fail on your own terms, which makes the wins hit different.

That line about "proves the thing actually works when you're not forcing it" is exactly right, @matthewkim. When it's a side project, there's no boss or deadline making you do it. So every bit of progress is pure fuel. It's just you and the work, and finishing something feels like a real choice you made, not an order you followed. That's what makes the late nights stick.
