My friend in Austin said AI art is just 'fancy copy-paste' and it made me stop and think.

Your friend is onto something. Saw a piece last week that was just a mashup of three famous paintings, like someone cut them up and glued them together. It had Monet's water lilies, Van Gogh's starry night, and the girl with the pearl earring all smushed into one image. No new ideas, just mixing what already exists. Feels like the program is just rearranging furniture it found in other people's houses.

A tech blog I follow said most AI art tools are trained on about 5 billion images scraped from the web. That's the furniture it's rearranging. The output is only a mix of those existing parts, it can't actually imagine something new. It explains why so much of it feels like a hollow copy of styles we already know. The program has no real life experience to draw from, just a giant database of other people's work.

It's like the world's most expensive collage project. They just glued a bunch of magazine clippings together and called it a day. The soul is missing because the machine never had one to begin with.
