Realized I was over-relying on AI for my college papers

Last semester I used ChatGPT to help me write a 5 page essay for my ethics class. I was just using it to get ideas at first but then I started letting it write full paragraphs. The tipping point was when my professor asked me to explain a point I made and I couldn't because the AI wrote it. I felt like a total fraud and now I only use AI for brainstorming outlines. Has anyone else caught themselves doing this without realizing how wrong it is?

Doesn't that feeling of not knowing your own argument hit hard though? I had the same wake-up call when my poli sci prof asked me to defend a point and I just froze up because I had no clue where it came from. It's wild how easy it is to slip into letting it do the thinking for you, but at least you caught it before it got worse lol.

Does the prof even realize they're grading thinking skills or just parroting ability?

Claire_walker you nailed it. Most profs reward the cleanest parroting, not the messiest thinking. Real arguments trip you up because they don't come with a script. Parroting feels safe until someone asks "why" and the whole thing falls apart (which is literally what happened to me in undergrad).
