Overheard my boss bragging about our 'ethical' AI layoff picks
Last week I was grabbing coffee and heard my manager tell a vendor that our new layoff tool was 'perfectly fair because it only looks at productivity metrics.' Except I know for a fact it ignored 40% of our team's offline mentoring work and gave the older guys lower scores. Now three people over 55 got cut in Austin and the rest of us are supposed to trust the algorithm. Has anyone else dealt with a company hiding behind 'data-driven' decisions that just recycle old biases? How do you push back without getting flagged as a troublemaker?
That line about being "perfectly fair because it only looks at productivity metrics" is the exact script they use to cover for bad data. What worked for me was writing down every gap between what the tool claims and what it actually does, then sending it to HR as questions instead of claims. Once it was in writing and they had to answer, the cuts got paused and they redid the review by hand.
