Was sure AI art was all trash until I saw a local comic use it for backgrounds

Last month at a zine fair in Portland, a guy had a 40 page comic where he used AI for the cityscapes and drew the characters himself. I thought it'd look lazy but honestly the backgrounds had a depth he couldn't do by hand, and it let him finish the issue in 2 weeks instead of 6. Has anyone else seen a hybrid workflow that actually changed your mind?

The depth thing you mentioned is the key. I do the same thing with my own pages, use AI for the detailed backgrounds and draw the characters to keep the style consistent. It cuts my time down by a lot but you really have to fix the small stuff, like street signs and windows that come out wonky. Also, running the background through a filter or adding a texture layer helps it blend with your line art so it does not look pasted in. It is a solid workflow once you learn what the AI is good at and what parts you always have to redo by hand.
