Spent $40 on a Midjourney subscription and got roasted by a client
I paid $40 for a Midjourney month to try and speed up some concept art for a freelance gig. The client asked for a character design with a specific pose and expression. I fed in the prompts but it kept giving me hands with six fingers and weird eyes. The client saw it and said it looked 'soulless and cheap', then asked for a refund on the deposit. Has anyone else had AI art totally backfire on a paid job like that?

$40 for a sneak peek at how clients really see AI art is actually kind of a bargain, silver linings and all that.

So @milesj70, what happened when you pointed out the hand thing to them before they made the comment about it being soulless? Sounds like they already had that opinion locked in before you even sent the final files, honestly.

Man, that REALLY stings. I feel for you, that's a brutal situation and a hard way to learn that lesson. The hand thing is such a dead giveaway too, clients notice that stuff right away even if they can't explain why it looks off. It's rough because AI can be a cool tool for inspiration or rough blocking, but using it for client-ready work is almost always a gamble that doesn't pay off. That whole "soulless and cheap" comment from them is harsh but also kind of the truth about how AI art feels to a lot of people right now. I hope you can find a way to salvage the relationship or at least use that experience to set way better boundaries next time.
