Spent 4 hours on an AI image of a fire hydrant and it still looked wrong
I was trying to generate a specific rusty red hydrant for a creative project, and the AI kept giving me these weird metallic blobs with no valves. Took me way too long to realize I needed to add 'cast iron texture' to the prompt before it even looked close to real. Has anyone else run into a simple detail that the AI just can't seem to get right?

Oh man, the cast iron texture struggle is SO real. I've found you have to add "with visible bolt patterns and valve stem" or it just gives you a smooth cylinder from a cartoon.

Yeah you're right that bolt patterns and valve stems help a lot, but @bennett.noah there's one thing that always trips me up with cast iron prompts. You gotta be real specific about the surface finish too, like saying "rough sand cast texture with visible parting lines" otherwise it comes out looking like it was machined smooth on a lathe. The AI loves to clean things up and make them look too perfect, you know? I've started throwing in phrases like "grainy metal surface with tiny pits and imperfections" just to keep that authentic foundry look. Without that it just gives you some generic shiny metal pipe that belongs in a Home Depot aisle. Stick with it though, once you nail the exact wording the results get way better.

Wait, has anyone else had the opposite problem? @kim_west I find that if I add too much texture detail the AI goes overboard and makes it look like it was dug out of a swamp, with these weird exaggerated bumps that don't look like real cast iron at all. I think there's a middle ground somewhere. Maybe it depends on the model you're using too, because I've gotten completely different results with the same prompt on different generators. For me, just saying "industrial cast iron finish" without too many extra words gets closer to what I want than loading it up with specifics. But hey, if that rough sand cast phrasing works for you, keep at it.
