My niece asked me to pick between her crayon drawing and an AI version of it, and I froze
My niece drew a purple dog with 7 legs at a birthday party in Fresno about 2 months ago, and I loved it so much I snapped a pic. Then on a slow Sunday I fed that pic into one of those AI art apps and it spit out a perfect fluffy purple dog with 4 legs and shading and everything. She asked me which one was better and I just stood there holding both prints like an idiot. I picked her original because the 7 legs are the whole point, they're what make it hers. The AI one looked like a stock photo that happened to be purple. Now I keep thinking about it though because her face kinda fell when I said hers was better, like she thought I was just being nice. What do you even say to a 9 year old about this stuff?
Did you tell her the 7 legs are the best part because nobody else in the world would think to draw that? I used to shrug off kid art as just cute clutter, but seeing her face drop like that would've wrecked me too, and now I get why the weird flaws are the whole thing.
