My kid's school art show made me rethink the whole 'prompt' thing
Three years ago, my daughter spent a month painting a picture of our dog for the school fair. Last week, I saw an AI image of a dog that looked just like it, made in maybe 30 seconds. It wasn't just about the time, it was that the AI picture had no story behind it, no paint on her clothes, no frustration when the ears looked wrong. The art show piece is still on our fridge, but now I see it differently. Has anyone else had a moment where a real object made the AI debate feel less abstract?

Man, this is happening everywhere now. It's like we're choosing the fast food version of everything. We order a meal kit instead of learning to cook, stream a movie instead of going to the theater, buy a mass printed poster instead of a local artist's print. The easy, perfect looking thing is winning. But then you realize the good stuff, the stuff you actually remember, was in the messy middle part. The burnt cookies, the sticky theater floor, the little flaws in the painting. We're cleaning up all the interesting bits of life and calling it progress.

Exactly, it's just a memory. That's the whole point. The memory is the real thing you're keeping. The painting is just the trigger. The AI picture is also just a trigger, but for no memory at all. So who cares how it was made. The fridge isn't a museum, it's a memory board. If an AI pic makes you feel the same way, then it works. Getting hung up on how it got there misses why you put it up in the first place.

Actually, the story behind the art is just a story you add on later. The paint on the clothes is just a mess to clean. That frustration you remember? That's just a kid being bad at painting until she got better. The AI skipped all the bad parts and got to the good picture. The thing on your fridge is a memory of your kid, not some big statement about art. People get too hung up on the work that went into something. If the picture is good, it's good. The AI made a good picture of a dog way faster. That's pretty cool when you think about it.
